Decasia Response

I was shocked by how "Decasia" continued to hold my interest despite its length.  I actually got chills at certain sections.  It's amazing to me how simply changing the lighting and adding music can give a story a completely different meaning.

First visual memory

It's hard to pinpoint what my first visual memory.  I guess when I was in around second grade, it snowed pretty heavily but we still had school.  I remember looking out the window at the school pine trees covered in white, and I told myself to remember that moment.

Web of art

Reading Walter Benjamin's article, it was easy to see how expansive the category of art actually is.  Benjamin compares painter and cameraman to magician and surgeon, in that one keeps a safe distance and the other delves into the world.  Clearly, the art of painting versus photography are extremely different.  Yet both are grouped into the same general category.  Benjamin expands his comparison of painting and more modern mechanical art by discussing the reaction of the public to the two.  I was surprised to see the truth in his explanation that, while the public frequently gathers to view the art of film, there are little to no opportunities to appreciate paintings in mass.  With film, it is easy to see what we as the audience should feel, but distinguishing the emotions of our reaction to a painting is much more difficult.  As such, I wonder, is the modern world slowly losing the ability to understand and even notice our own emotions without the help of those around us?
